Welcome from the Psychiatry Training Office

Thank you for your interest in our residency program. Completing medical school and getting ready for residency is an exciting time and for those of you interested in our department and in the field of psychiatry, we share in your wonder and drive. We believe that as new and exciting developments in the field of psychiatry continue to emerge; future psychiatrists need ever more to be able to combine the caring and empathic treatment our patients expect with the cutting edge science and evidence base they deserve.

Working with patient and families during residency is an enriching and rewarding experience. Thanks to our faculty and training sites, we deliver a wide range of training experiences, didactics, research and mentoring opportunities so our trainees can develop the career paths that are best suited for them. We offer education and experience in various forms of individual psychotherapy, advanced psychopharmacology, neurotherapies and interventional treatments (ECT, TMS, esketamine) and we emphasize a collaborative, trauma informed and systems based approach to care.

Over the years, our residents have an established track record of attaining national awards based on their leadership and accomplishments during residency training. Residents get early and frequent exposure to many faculty members with subspecialty training and many of residents go on to get fellowship training. Our department offers fellowships in Addiction Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent PsychiatryCL PsychiatryForensic Psychiatry and Geriatric Psychiatry. Within USF, we also have opportunities for psychiatric trainees to go on to fellowships in sleep medicine, pain medicine or palliative care. Many of our graduates develop a strong commitment to and sense of connection with our community and after training go on to rewarding careers in research, education and providing much needed psychiatric services for the Tampa Bay community.

Please explore our website so you can learn more about our department, our residency program and our training sites. Instructions on how to apply for a position can also be found. We look forward to hearing from you.
