Division of Neonatology

The Division of Neonatology at the University of South Florida College of Medicine manages the clinical care of neonates, teaches fellows, residents and medical students, and conducts research.

The division members attend high risk deliveries, provide 24-hour care for premature and critically ill newborns and infants, support a critical care transport team, and an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) team.

  • Members of the Division of Neonatology recently participated in the first ex utero intrapartum treatment (EXIT) at Tampa General Hospital.  Click here to view the story.

    Russell Kirby, PhD, MS, is one of 3 faculty in the College of Public Health who was recently recognized with a 2009 Outstanding Research Achievement Award. Dr. Kirby was recognized for being the recipient of a prestigious award by the National Birth Defects Prevention Network. Dr. Kirby has a joint-appointment in the Department of Pediatric’s Division of Neonatology. Hamisu Salihu, MD, PhD was also an award recipient; he was recognized for publication of a novel theory related to causes of fetal death.  Dr. Salihu is currently collaborating on research projects with several neonatology faculty including Drs. Rubin, Fant and Ashmeade.

  • Construction has begun on the Jennifer Leigh Muma Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Tampa General Hospital.  Construction is expected to be complete in early 2011.

  • USF was awarded $28.8 million to oversee the NIH-sponsored National Children's StudyDr. Wendy Nembhard is co-principal investigator for Hillsborough and Orange counties, and Dr. Lewis Rubin is co-leader for the Hillsborough County site. 

  • Dr. Lewis Rubin joined USF Neonatology as the Pamela S. and Leslie M. Muma Endowed Chair in Neonatology, Professor and Chief of Neonatology, and Medical Director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Tampa General Hospital.  Click here to view story
