Division of Infectious Diseases
The Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases of the University of South Florida manages the full spectrum of infectious diseases, including bacterial, fungal, viral and parasitic infections. Its integrated approach combines basic science research, translational trials and community research, along with dedicated bedside care.
We offer consultation, inpatient and outpatient diagnoses, and treatment for acute and chronic infectious diseases. Specialty management includes management of hepatitis, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and other immunocompromising conditions. In addition, we provide acute and long-term management of antibiotic therapy for children with infections following hospital discharge, or we provide community referrals.
The USF Pediatric Infectious Disease group provides comprehensive and compassionate care with 24 hour on-call services and intensive medical case management services. Inpatient services include consultation and follow-up care at St. Joseph's Hospital and Tampa General Hospital Outpatient services are available to community providers at several locations in the Tampa Bay area, including West/Central Tampa, North Tampa, Clearwater and south St. Petersburg.
The USF Pediatric/Adolescent HIV Program provides comprehensive medical care to HIV- infected children and adolescents, and to HIV-exposed infants and their families. The Division works collaboratively with the Florida/Caribbean AIDS Education and Training Center at USF to deliver state-of-the-art, evidence-based care, and participates in multiple research protocols, including immunization trials. The Division provides services to the perinatal population by partnering with community providers to identify pregnant women who are HIV positive, and provides education with the goal of supporting them through a healthy pregnancy and preventing vertical transmission. Infants are followed closely to establish HIV status and to support the family through the process.
With the support of the community, USF has become a regional center of excellence for HIV care, serving 11 counties with a total population of over 3.5 million people. The Department of Pediatrics at USF is the sole provider of comprehensive HIV care to children and adolescents in West Central and Southwest Florida. Our primary goal is to improve the health and lives of infected children by providing excellent medical care, access to clinical trials, psychosocial support and education.
