General Academic Pediatrics (GAP) Fellowship
Welcome to the General Academic Pediatrics (GAP) Fellowship at the University of South Florida (USF). This two year fellowship is designed to train candidates for a future career in academic pediatrics, patient-oriented clinical research, teaching, and administration.
The USF General Academic Pediatric (GAP) fellowship's long-term objectives aim at preparing diverse, qualified trainees to be the future leaders in pediatric health-related research and education. GAP fellows will be trained in patient care, clinical/ patient-oriented research, teaching and administration. All fellows participating in the USF GAP fellowship will be expected to complete all the requirements leading to a Masters Degree. In addition to the course work the fellows' two years of training will be dedicated to mentored research (approx. 50% of time), clinical duties/patient care, pediatric residents' teaching and supervision, administrative and medical students' teaching opportunities. It is expected that graduates of the USF GAP fellowship will go on to pursue academic and public health leadership positions in the areas of child and adolescent health.
The specific objectives of the fellowship include:
- To educate the trainee in the basics of pediatric research, and prepare clinical pediatric researchers who will contribute to the advancement of the field.
- To educate the trainee in all the clinical aspects of General Pediatric practice including inpatient and outpatient care, teaching and administration.
- To prepare the trainee for a future career as academic pediatrician who will be a teacher of the future.
The GAP Fellowship is a two year program. Fellows have the option join one of two tracks.
Primary Care Track
This track will include options for several focus areas such as:
- Advocacy (including legislative advocacy)
- Community Pediatrics (including school health and mobile health)
- Adolescent Medicine
- Child Abuse
- Children with Special Health Care Needs

Academic Hospitalist Track
This track includes inpatient training primarily at All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburgy, normal newborn nursery experience, PICU, ER and electives.
