Training for Psychology/School Psychology Graduate Students

Training

All prospective school psychology and clinical psychology students must have completed required coursework in Early Childhood Assessment, as well as Advanced Practicum placement in a health care setting.

Supervision

All pediatric psychology students are supervised primarily by Kathleen Armstrong, NCSP, and licensed school psychologist. Supervision meetings are conducted once a week for approximately 2 hours. In addition, interns receive ongoing case supervision in the form of case conferences, assistance with assessment procedures and differential diagnosis, creating recommendations, and report writing, for each child and family to whom they provide services.

 

Training Content

Clinical Care

  • Provide leadership in team evaluations for children
  • Use problem-solving process to identify referral problem, collect data, and utilize results to make treatment decisions
  • Implement evidence-based interventions and collect progress monitoring data to document outcomes
  • Develop family friendly problem-solving approaches to address child challenging behaviors
  • Collaborate with local schools and community resources to assist in the implementation of interventions for children

Education

  • Problem solve medically complex referrals with pediatric residents
  • Attend local conferences on pediatric health issues

Research

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team (e.g., specialty physicians, nutritionists, nurses, teachers, therapists) to develop intervention strategies based upon evidence-based approaches
  • Provide leadership in grant applications, implementation and management of proposals (e.g., develop IRB protocols, manage budget, create and manage data base, create data collection tools, analyze data, create reports for funding source)
  • Participate in collaborative grant-writing groups to secure funds for expansion of Child Development programs
