Delivering cost-effective medical and dental care directly to underserved children in their own neighborhoods.

In February 2006, the University of South Florida (USF) Department of Pediatrics partnered with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Tampa Bay to bring a Ronald McDonald Care Mobile™ (RMCM) Program to the Tampa Bay area. The RMCM is a 40-foot mobile medical and dental office, specifically built and equipped to deliver health services to at-risk children in the communities where they live. To date, there are 46 RMCMs worldwide, including three in Florida. The Tampa Bay RMCM is unique in that it is one of the few that is part of the educational program for training residents, medical and nursing students. By providing care in underserved and vulnerable communities, the trainees are exposed to cultural diversity and sensitivity.

The RMCM delivers cost-effective medical and dental care directly to underserved children in their own neighborhoods, with services ranging from primary care (well-child visits, school physicals and sports physicals); treatment for chronic and acute illnesses; health education and oral hygiene education; treatment and self-management education for asthma; nutrition counseling; childhood health promotion and injury prevention education; and social services referrals. The RMCM staff works with community, state and county organizations to help families apply for government-assisted health insurance, thereby helping families gain access to a medical home.
