Allen W. Root, MD
Dr. Root served on the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine after completing his training in pediatrics and endocrinology. In 1969 he joined the faculty at Temple University School of Medicine as an Associate Professor, progressing to Professor in 1973. In 1973, Dr. Root relocated to Tampa where he was appointed Chief of the Division Pediatric Endocrinology at All Children’s Hospital and the University of South Florida. Since joining USF, Dr. Root has served in many roles including Associate Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics-Tampa, Vice-Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics-St. Petersburg, and Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He is responsible for the development of the Pediatric residency program at All Children’s Hospital and served as Director from 1979 to 1989. He was director of the Pediatric Endocrine Fellowship Program until recently and remains an active participant in the training of endocrinology fellows. Dr. Root served as president of the Lawson Wilkins Pediatric Endocrine Society. He currently serves on the editorial boards of numerous medical journals. His primary scholarly interests relate to the care of children with disorders of growth, puberty, thyroid, calcium, and bone metabolism.

Scholarly Activity
Dr. Root is an author of over 200 scientific publications and book chapters. His scholarly interests include a wide variety of endocrine disorders, in particular, growth and calcium disorders.
