Patricia J. Emmanuel, M.D.
Dr. Emmanuel is a Professor of Pediatrics and Public Health, and is on the faculty of the USF Department of Mental Health Law and Policy. She received her B.S. from the University of Notre Dame, and her M.D. from the University of Florida in Gainesville. She completed her pediatric residency at USF, where she also served as chief resident. After completing an infectious disease fellowship at USF in 1989 she joined the faculty. She served as Chief of Pediatric Infectious Disease from 1993 to 2012, when she was named the Lewis A. Barness Chair of Pediatrics. From 2007 to 2012, she was the Associate Dean for Clinical Research at the Morsani College of Medicine, and was founding Director of USF Health's Clinical and Translational Science Institute.
Dr. Emmanuel has been the Medical Director for Clinical Research at Tampa General Hospital since 2009. Since 1994, she has served as the Medical Director of the Pediatric/Adolescent HIV Program, which provides primary and specialty care to children and adolescents in Southwest Florida. She has participated in HIV policy making at the national level as a member of the Board of Directors of the HIV Medical Association and as a member of the Committee on Pediatric AIDS for the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Honors and Awards
Dr. Emmanuel has been the recipient of numerous local and national awards, including Attending Physician of the Year Teaching award; the HIV Training Grant Award of the Infectious Disease Society of America and the President's Women's Leadership award of the University of South Florida. She is an alumnus of the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) program and has been listed in the "Best Doctors in America" and in the top 1% of pediatric specialists by U.S News.
Scholarly Activity
Dr. Emmanuel's research focus is pediatric HIV/AIDs. She is especially interested in antiretroviral drug treatment for HIV, community-based methods of preventing perinatally-acquired HIV, and the long-term complications of HIV.
Dr. Emmanuel has been the principal investigator for more than two dozen research studies related to HIV care and prevention. Currently, she is the co-principal investigator for the USF Clinical Trial Unit of the International Maternal Pediatric and Adolescent AIDS Clinical Trials Groups (IMPAACT) and Adolescent Trials Network (ATN), both funded by NIH. She is also principal investigator for several HIV-related grants that are funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration of the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services. Since 2007 she has been the principal investigator for the Fogarty International Center's Program in Adolescent HIV/AIDS Research Training Grant - a NIH funded program that focuses on building research capacity for adolescent HIV/AIDS in India.
Dr. Emmanuel is frequently invited to speak on issues related to HIV and clinical research at national and international venues.
