Research Interests

  • Our research is focused on the role of histone deacetylases (HDACs) in cancer. Among the18 HDACs, our endeavors deal primarily with HDAC6, a class IIB HDAC. In particular, we are interested in studying HDAC6’s functions in stress response, as well as how HDAC6’s activities are regulated by physiological and pathological cues. Our recent research indicates that HDAC6 plays an important role in the DNA damage response and DNA repair by regulating DNA mismatch repair proteins. In addition, we have also found that HDAC6’s activities are governed by the extracelluar signal-regulated kinase (ERK1). Our future studies will validate our findings in animal models and human samples as well as identify novel HDAC6 substrates.
