Department of Pathology and Cell Biology

In an attempt to support President Genshaft's vision of making USF one of the top 50 public research universites in the U.S., under the tutelage of Vice President/Dean Klasko, and with the support of its faculty, staff, and students, USF Health has outlined a very expansive and strategic plan to enhance its research capacity and in the next five years, to double its extramural research funding. To accomplish this goal, the College of Medicine has unveiled a strategic roadmap to transform its basic and clinical research enterprises and further enhance the quality of its graduate programs. In the process of this change, USF Health has adopted a new paradigm, which dictates that research matters and that it plays an instrumental role in the success of ALL our core missions.

With this reinvigorated strategic focus on research and in partnership with its faculty, USF Health has identified four "signature" programs which will serve as areas of strategic research interest. These signature programs include Neurosciences (Brain Health); Cardiovascular (Heart Health); Allergy, Immunology, and Infectious Diseases (Immune Health); and Cancer Biology. These interdisciplinary programs will be supported by recruitment of new faculty, development of required core facilities, and by enhancing our capacity in emerging technologies.

To accomplish USF Health's goals, the College of Medicine has initiated the process of implementing its strategic roadmap in the most effective and timely manner. To enhance interdisciplinary research and to ensure that we have a critical mass of faculty in each department who can effectively serve the research and education missions, we are reorganizing our basic science departments. As of April 3, 2006, the Department of Pathology will be merged with the Department of Anatomy. The name of the newly merged department will be the Department of Pathology and Cell Biology.
