Academic Philosophy

"In a lecture I attended years ago Dr. Alfred Gilman, co-author of The Pharmacological basis of Therapeutics stated “every drug has side effects”, which still resonates given the large number of drugs receiving FDA approval in the intervening years."

Research Interests

  • Our laboratory focuses on 3 human pregnancy complications: 1) abruptions; 2)
  • chorioamnionitis (CAM), in the presence or absence of infectious bacteria and other microorganisms and frequently complicated by 3) preeclampsia (PE) and 4) a recent Florida funded Zika-related grant. Abruptions, accompanied by excess thrombin formation from decidual cell-expressed tissue factor, and CAM frequently elicit preterm delivery and/or intrauterine growth restriction, whereas recognition of PE symptoms frequently leads to the decision to deliver the fetus prematurely. Taken together, CAM, PE and abruption are leading causes of fetal and maternal morbidity and mortality that impose major USA and worldwide major health care costs. A separate project investigates occurrence of abnormal uterine bleeding in women administered long-term progestin only contraceptives, which is not a health issue, but a source of annoyance causing discontinuation of these otherwise safe and effective agents.
