Biographical Sketch
Dr. Ruben Quintero is the Professor and Director of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and its fellowship training program at the University of South Florida. Dr. Quintero joined the USF faculty in November 2005 after serving as the medical director of the Fetal Therapy Program at St. Joseph's Women's Hospital from 1996 to 2005. A world-renowned fetal surgeon, Dr. Quintero developed the field of operative fetoscopy to treat birth defects in utero with minimally-invasive techniques. Dr. Quintero pioneered the selective laser surgery technique to treat twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), a condition resulting from the unbalanced flow of blood between two fetuses sharing a common placenta. Dr. Quintero proposed the staging classification of TTTS that is used worldwide, and is one of few physicians who performs laser surgery to correct the syndrome. Dr. Quintero is a Diplomate of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Maternal Fetal Medicine. He is President-elect of the Ibero-American Society for Prenatal Diagnosis and Therapy. Dr. Quintero has authored dozens of original scientific papers, book chapters and reviewers. Dr. Quintero is the editor of the first book on minimally invasive fetal surgery, Diagnostic and Operative Fetoscopy, published in 2002.Interests
