Division of Spinal Neurosurgery
The division of spinal neurosurgery, headed by Dr. Fernando L. Vale and Juan Uribe, M.D., consists of members of the department of neurosurgery for whom the treatment of spinal disorders is a major focus of their practice. Within the division the Center for Complex Spinal Disorders focuses on the most serious and complex manifestations of disease in the spine including scoliosis, infections, and tumors.
ContactsCenter for Complex Spinal Disorders
Initially founded by our original chairman Dr. David Cahill a pioneer in modern spinal surgery. Physicians in the center treat a wide array of spinal disorders and deformities including congenital deformities, degenerative and traumatic disease, as well as spinal tumors, infections, and scoliosis. Integrated Pituitary Disorders Center
The integrated pituitary disorders center offers multidisciplinary evaluation and treatment of these complex conditions. The center is under the direction of Drs. Fernando L. Vale, Mitch Drucker, and Anthony Morrison. This monthly clinic involves endocrinologists, neuro-ophthalmologists as well as neurosurgeons in a single integrated setting. The center provides hormonal treatment and replacement therapy as well as surgical management.

Center for Movement Disorders
Movement disorders, including Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, and dystonias are often only poorly controlled with medication. Our physicians work closely with the Movement Disorders Clinic in the Department of Neurology to provide surgical treatment options, usually deep brain stimulation to patients with these and other conditions. Our physicians involved in the treatment of these complex disorders are Donald Smith, M.D. and Fernando L. Vale, M.D.

Stereotactic Radiosurgery Center
Stereotactic Radiosurgery is the delivery of high dose focal radiation, often in a single dose for the treatment of tumors and vascular malformations of the nervous system. It may be an option for otherwise inoperable conditions or as a noninvasive alternative to traditional surgery.
Stereotactic Radiosurgery is performed by Dr. Donald Smith. This procedure is available at both Tampa General Hospital as well as Moffitt Cancer Center.
Surgical Pain Management Services
Pain has always been a poorly understood and often poorly treated condition. As research has increased our understanding of the mechanism and causes of pain so have our treatment options increased. Many pain conditions are poorly controlled by conservative measures and other conditions, such as trigeminal neuralgia, are best treated surgically.
Our department offers a wide array of surgical options for the treatment of pain including microvascular decompression, spinal cord stimulation, intra-thecal delivery systems, as well as neuro-ablative procedures. Drs. Donald Smith and Harry van Loveren are available to offer surgical treatment for primary pain conditions as well as unremitting post surgical pain when conservative measures fail.
