PhD Research and education in the Ph.D. in Medical Sciences Program, concentration in Molecular Medicine is focused on interdisciplinary approaches to the study of bacteriology, biochemistry, immunology, molecular biology and virology as it relates to human health and disease such as allergy and immune dysfunction, cancer, cardiovascular disorders, infectious diseases and inheritable defects. Detailed information on specific research of the Faculty is available in our Doctoral Handbook of the Department of Molecular Medicine. For admission, students must meet the minimum qualification of a bachelor’s degree in biological, chemical, physical, or engineering sciences from a regionally accredited institution together with minimum GPA of 3.0 and a GRE score. The majority of students typically apply to this type of program significantly exceed these minimum admission requirements. Training will include a unique interdisciplinary blend of didactic coursework, journal clubs, seminar series, as well as significant research experience. Students can select from a broad range of formal courses to build their unique knowledge required for their specific research work in the laboratory. The PhD in Medical Sciences requires a minimum of 90 credit hours for the PhD. A minimum of 24 credit hours of didactic coursework are required. The remaining requirements for the PhD are consistent with University policy, and include a written qualifying examination, a written dissertation and public oral defense of the dissertation.
