Welcome to the
Internal Medicine Residency Program

Welcome to the Internal Medicine Residency Program at USF Health Morsani College of Medicine. We are a university-based program located in the beautiful Tampa Bay area.

Our mission is to develop our residents into physician-leaders who have a strong foundation in patient care and medical knowledge but are also skilled in teaching, scholarly activity, leadership, and quality improvement. We achieve this mission by providing diverse patient care environments and ensuring exposure to diverse pathology.

Our residents train at Tampa General Hospital, a tertiary referral center; Moffitt Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute designated hospital; and James A. Haley Veterans Hospital. Tampa General Hospital was recently ranked by US News and World Report in the top 50 nationally in 6 medical specialties, #1 in the Tampa Bay area, and #2 in Florida. Moffitt Cancer Center continues to rank in the top 10 Best Hospitals for Cancer in the US. In addition to our great training facilities, we provide curriculum on the business of medicine, leadership, teaching, and quality improvement. We are very proud of our 3-year rolling board pass rate of 97% with 100% the last two years. Our residents will be adept physicians who provide high-value care, become self-learners, and become leaders in their chosen practice community.

Because our success is based on our residents’ success, our program has a resident-centered philosophy. Our residency is for our residents. The relationship between the administration, faculty, and residents is supportive. We understand and know our residents personally to help them become successful in their learning and career pathway. The residents also play an integral role in providing the program feedback on improvement. Our best improvements have come from resident feedback. I would encourage you to check out our resident testimonial videos to learn firsthand how our residents view the program.

Thank you for taking the time to review our program. If you are looking for a supportive program committed to your success, we welcome your application.

Why Match at USF?

Living in Tampa, FL is like being on vacation all year long. Tampa was rated as one of the best cities to live in by US News & World Report. Hillsborough County is the third fastest growing county in the US. Tampa is a large diverse city that is home to world renown beaches, champion sports teams such as the Tampa Bay Lightning, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Tampa Bay Rays, exhilarating theme parks, a vibrant music & arts scene, and innovative microbreweries.
You will be exposed to subspecialty training in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. USF Internal Medicine offers all internal medicine subspecialty fellowships, great fellowship directors, and subspecialty mentors.
Our Departmental Blue Ridge Ranking is the highest of universities in Florida. USF Internal Medicine ranked 36 among all universities and 22 among state institutions. All our residents participate in a scholar’s council with mentoring and opportunities for research. Our residents showcase their work at national conferences and with publications and abstracts.
Tampa General Hospital, our affiliate institution which is staffed by USF attendings, is ranked nationally by US News & World Report in Cardiology (45), Endocrinology (13), GI (27), Nephrology (18), and Pulmonary (28). Our outpatient care is ranked in the top 17% by Doximity. Moffitt Cancer Center continues to rank in the top 10 Best Hospitals for Cancer in the US.
We make learning and residency training fun. We have diverse didactics which include topics that cover board review, research, business of medicine, leadership, wellness, workshops, doctor’s dilemma, medical Pictionary, quality improvement and assurance, and journal club.
Our program director, associate program directors, department chair, and staff are visible, engaged leaders committed to resident education through collaborative relationships, quality education, and mentoring. Resident feedback is valued in program administration, design, and individual scheduling.
2nd and 3rd year residents participate in the X+Y ambulatory block model with focused exposure in continuity clinic and medicine subspecialties in the ambulatory setting.
We are a cohesive program with a great team atmosphere among attendings, fellows, residents, interns, students, and all ancillary staff at all hospitals. We have coaching teams, social events, and retreats for all our residents as they transition through training.
Our attendings are exceptional and dedicate themselves to teaching. We have over 40 listed in “Best Doctors” and have been recognized as the best teaching department in the College of Medicine for multiple consecutive years. The department is ranked in the top 4% by the AAMC ranking for undergraduate medical education preparation for residency.
We train in three very different settings: a top Florida tertiary care center, a national comprehensive cancer center, and one of the largest VA hospitals in the country. Tampa General ranks among the top 5 in the nation on the acuity of care index. Moffitt Cancer Center is one of 25 national cancer institutes in the county, and the James A. Haley VA Hospital is one of the 3 busiest in the nation.
