Graduate Certificate in Biomedical Ethics
This graduate certificate is directed towards students who have an interest in the ethical aspects of both clinical care and basic research in the biomedical sciences or who wish to extend their knowledge in this area as part of a more extensive program in the biomedical sciences.
Students interested in pursuing a medical or health-related career in either patient care or primary research require familiarity with the diverse aspects of the ethics of biomedical research. Bioethics has been defined as “the study of the ethical and moral implications of new biological discoveries and biomedical advances, as in the fields of genetic engineering and drug research” whereas medical ethics is primarily a field of applied ethics, the study of moral values and judgments as they apply to medicine. As a scholarly discipline, medical ethics encompasses its practical application in clinical settings as well as work on its history, philosophy, theology, and sociology.
