2012 Scholarly Concentrations Program Summer Stipend Opportunities for MSI Students

USF Health Morsani College of Medicine (MCOM) students are able to participate in scholarly projects supported by the Scholarly Concentrations Program through the Office of Educational Affairs. For a period of seven weeks starting In May, eligible students will work with MCOM faculty and affiliate hospitals on their scholarly projects.

2012 Student Alumni Ambassador

The student alumni ambassador is a paid summer program for 7 weeks starting in May 2012 offered exclusively to MSI students with the goal of engaging MD alumni and securing current contact information. 

This position is a 40-hour a week appointment where the student alumni ambassador aids the USF Health alumni relations office in the completion of key tasks essential to the growth of the alumni program.  The student alumni ambassador contacts alumni by telephone and email to inform them of upcoming MCOM alumni events and to secure current and complete contact information.  Research through the use of internet tools may be required to locate email addresses and telephone numbers. The focus is on alumni invited to the 2012 Reunion.  Student alumni ambassadors also spend four or more hours a week shadowing an alumnus.  Initial appointments will be in place and subsequent appointments are secured by the student alumni ambassador during the telephone and email contacts.  Weekly reports are required to document contact with alumni and changes to contact information.  Flexible schedules are required since the shadowing appointments are based on the physician’s schedules and calling may be required at night or during the weekend.  A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation is required.  An end of experience summary report is to be completed by the student and is due by August 15th, 2012.

The date for submission is April 4th by 5pm.  The MSI student must be in good academic standing and progressing to their MSII year.

LHVN/USF Medical Student Summer Enrichment Fellowship

Participating USFCOM students will be matched 1-1 with a physician mentor. Students will have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge research, observe in hospital and outpatient settings, and learn about current LHVN initiatives in patient safety, quality, technology, patient centered care and leadership.  Students will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to observe rounds, office hours as well as surgery.

Selected students will participate for 7 weeks in May-July, approximately 40 hours per week.  Specific schedule will be determined by the student and the mentor's availability

LHVN will provide dorm housing for selected students at their Cedar Crest & I-78 or 17th Street hospital site.  Most of the student's work and observations will take place at these sites.  Selected students will be provided a stipend to offset the cost of their travel, meals and transportation.  It is highly recommended that students provide their own transportation.

AUFRANC  Summer Research  Scholars  Program at New England Baptist Hospital

New England Baptist Hospital (NEBH) offers nationally recognized expertise in orthopedic surgery, built on more t.han a century of experience, with an exceptional blend of superb patient care and advanced medical knowledge. The site of one of the first artificial hip replacements in the country, NEBH continues to lead the way in new methods to diagnose and treat all forms of musculoskeletal disorders and disease.

NEBH performs more orthopedic hip and knee procedures than any other hospital in Massachusetts. The prestigious Otto E. Aufranc Fellowship in Adult Reconstructive Surgery at the Baptist has trained many of the most prominent surgeons in orthopedics.  Our clinical research efforts encompass the breadth of hip and knee joint replacement surgery, including pre-operative planning, intra-operative techniques, post-operative management, and long-term outcomes.

 

We are conducting a national search for highly-motivated medical students who wish to conduct novel research over the course of a summer. Opportunities to observe surgery and attend didactics are also available. The resources of our Research Department, which include a total joint replacement registry, epidemiologists, and an in-house statistician, will be available to the research scholar.

 

Fellowship Term: June 1st to August 15th

Stipend: $4,000 and housing allowance

2012 The Arnold P. Gold Foundation Student Summer Fellowships  

2012 Application

The Gold Foundation is accepting applications for the Student Summer Fellowship program. The grant award includes a $3,000 stipend for a 10-week period (schools are encouraged to supplement this amount by up to $600). Projects that do not meet the 10-week requirement will be prorated accordingly.

Medical students may apply for either the Research Fellowship or the Service Fellowship program.  Sample titles from previous research fellowships: "Prevalence of Depression in Adolescent Emergency Department, " "Assessing the Service and Educational Impact of Medical Student-Run Health Clinics."  Application procedures are attached or can be found on the Foundation website, (Programs Grants/ Gold Foundation Programs).

MEDICAL STUDENT SUMMER CLINICAL EXTERNSHIP (MSSCE)

The Association of Academic Physiatrists (AAP) is excited to announce a new opportunity for medical students –the Medical Student Summer Clinical Externship (MSSCE) program.  MSSCE has been developed for medical students with a strong desire for clinical experience in the field of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) and who are eagerly seeking opportunities to see patients. This program aims to provide a wide range of inpatient and outpatient clinical exposure and to allow students to explore the human side of patient care and the psychosocial environments their patients face through an eight-week summer externship. Deadline for students to apply is April 6, 2012.

 

UW-Madison Underrepresented Minority Visiting Clerkship Scholarship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine for the MSIV student

This scholarship program supports a 4th year medical student for a 4-week visiting clerkship in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The scholarship is available in amounts of up to $2000 to cover tuition, housing and living expenses associated with the visiting elective.

2011 Bridging the Gaps Community Health Internship

BTG links the training of health and social service professionals with the provision of health-related services for underserved and economically disadvantaged populations.

BTG CHIP is a paid community-based summer internship program that helps students gain a broader understanding of the factors that affect health in underserved and economically disadvantaged urban communities. BTG CHIP is a 40 hour/week/seven-week interdisciplinary program that combines the provision of health-related services for underserved populations with the training of student interns in the health and social services fields. Students' projects are designed in collaboration with the community organizations based on community-defined needs and the professional discipline and interests of the students. Interns are matched with non-profit community sites in Allentown, PA. Projects are overseen by LVHN's Division of Education and students are mentored directly in the field. Housing is provided for USF COM students. Students are paid a $3,000 total stipend for participation.

2011 AHEC Interdiciplinary Community Health Scholars Summer Program

AHEC Interdisciplinary Community Health Scholars are health professions students interested in working with rural and medically underserved populations. They use the training and skill sets of their respective disciplines to create unique, comprehensive solutions to health disparities impacting local communities

Fourteen scholars will spend 8 weeks of their summer working part time in teams to develop and implement projects that have a direct impact on the health status of medically underserved communities.  Scholars will work together in interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement community-based tobacco projects in rural or urban underserved communities. The time commitment is 8 hours per day, three days per week for 8 weeks.

During Summer 2011, AHEC ICHS teams will work either at Gulfcoast North AHEC in Land O' Lakes (serving Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties) or Gulfcoast South AHEC in Sarasota (serving Charlotte, DeSoto, Sarasota and Manatee counties). Students may apply to only one program.

Eligibility

Health professions students from a variety of primary care and allied health disciplines are invited to apply:

  • Medical students during the summer between their first and second year of medical school
  • Physical therapy doctoral students
  • Graduate nurse practitioner students in the areas of adult, family, pediatrics, or  psychiatric/mental health
  • Upper level undergraduate and graduate public health and/or social work students
  • Upper level undergraduate and graduate nursing students
  • First and second year pharmacy students.
  • Dental assisting and dental hygiene students.
  • Respiratory therapy students.
  • PTA/OTA students
  • Select undergraduate pre-health professional students
  • Other allied health professional students.

Project Placement Locations

Gulfcoast North AHEC (serving Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties): ICHS participants will work in Land OLakes on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between June 06 and July 28, 2011.

Gulfcoast South AHEC (serving Charlotte, DeSoto, Sarasota and Manatee counties): ICHS participants will work in Sarasota on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between May 31 and July 21, 2011

Program Incentives

Participating students will receive a $2,500 educational grant. Select students may be eligible to receive elective course credit/field experience from their respective academic programs for their participation (pending approval of advisor and/or field placement coordinator). Participation in ICHS provides excellent experience for resumes as well as contacts or connections to possible future employment opportunities. Limited travel assistance stipends (beyond commuting to/from the AHEC office) are available

2011 Southwest Georgia Family Medicine Residency Program

Application

The faculty and residents at the Southwest Georgia Family Medicine Residency Program invite you to work alongside them for two weeks during the summer of 2011. This is an excellent opportunity for you to develop history and physical exam sills in a relaxed clinical environment. Many patient encounters can be had at our facility. We have found that this allows for a better understanding of primary care and is beneficial for future clerkships.

This opportunity is available to all students who have completed their first year of medical school. Housing and all meals will be provided at no cost. All applications must be received by March 11. Selected students will be contacted by March 25 with more detailed information. The following dates are available this year:

2011 Vanderbilt School of Medicine

The summer research program for medical students at Vanderbilt in Nephrology and Hypertension allows medical students to conduct research under the direction of an established Vanderbilt scientist in the areas of in the area of Nephrology and/or Hypertension during the summer. 2011 Medical Student Summer Fellowship Program

The American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA) is now accpeting applications for their summer fellowship program, a 10 to 12 week laboratory experience designed to attract and motivate young, talented medical students to pursue a career in brain tumor research. Fellows spend their summer in a neiro-oncology lab, learning research skills from experienced mentors.

Each Summer Fellow will receive a $3,000 stipend and is required to submit a report on their experience. Based on these reports, an "outstanding medical student" is selected to receive the annual ABTA Lucien Rubenstein Award. The recipient of the award, named in honor of Lucien J. Rubenstein, M.D., a world-renowned brain tumor researcher, will receive a $1,000 bonus.

Applications are due March 14, 2011.


ASTRO 2011 Minority Summer Fellowship Award

Purpose: To introduce first/second year medical students from under-represented minority groups early in their medical education to the discipline of radiation oncology. The Fellowship will provide medical students with a unique training opportunity that focuses on mentoring and hands-on expereince in raditation oncology clinical and lab disciplines.

The ASTRO Fellows will each receive a $3,000 packages that includes a $2,400 stipend for an eight-week training program and $600 to attend the ASTRO Annual Meeting the following year.

Applications must be received no later than March 1, 2011. Any received after the deadline will not be consider.

2011 NASPGHAN/CDHNF Medical Student Mentored Summer Research Program

Purpose: To develop a program at multiple sites throughout the U.S. and Canada through which medical students can have 10-week research experiences under the mentorship of basic or clinical scientists with a research focus in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology, or nutrition

Candidates: Students in good standing at accredited medical schools in the U.S. and Canada who have completed their first year of medical training and who seek to pursue a research experience between the first and second years of medical school.
