Teaching Responsibilities:
Physical Therapy Science: Prosthetics Unit
Research Interests:
Prosthetic materials science; functional outcomes of amputee rehabilitation; amputee gait; technical aspects of prosthetic fabrication, fitting, adjustment and alignment.
Practice:
Dr. Highsmith has practiced physical therapy since 2003. Practice experience includes outpatient orthopaedics, outpatient prosthetics, sub-acute rehabilitation, and working in skilled nursing facility settings. He recently was appointed project manager for the University's federal "Demonstration Project on Prosthetics and Orthotics" grant. As project manager, Dr. Highsmith will coordinate collaboration between the School of Physical Therapy and College of Engineering to develop prosthetic and orthotic educational material and conduct pilot research on select orthotic, prosthetic and bioengineering topics.
