Established in 1980 within the University of South Florida College of Medicine, the Eric Pfeiffer Suncoast Alzheimer's Center is the flagship clinic of the USF Health Byrd Alzheimer's Institute. The Suncoast Center has been at the forefront of improving the quality of life for persons affected by Alzheimer's disease (AD). Through the leadership of its founding director, Eric Pfeiffer, MD, the Center has won critical acclaim for its pioneering research into the causes and treatment of AD and for its commitment to helping family and professional caregivers.

Patient & Family-Centered Care

hspace="10"The Suncoast Alzheimer’s Center offers patients and their families a variety of clinical services. Our Clinical Experts are uniquely qualified to perform

  • Comprehensive clinical assessments that will diagnose memory problems
  • Medication review and follow-up care after diagnosis
  • Family counseling
  • Clinical research and drug studies

At your first visit,

  • You will undergo evaluation from a physician specifically trained to work with older people, usually a geriatric psychiatrist.
  • You and your caregiver will talk with a health professional to obtain a complete medical history.
  • You will be asked to perform special cognitive tests with one of the staff.
  • Your doctor may order laboratory tests or brain imaging studies like an MRI.
  • Your doctor will meet with you and disccuss your diagnosis and recommendations for caregivers.

If you are considering an evaluation for yourself or someone you care for, you will need to complete our Memory Screening Form first.  Click here to print the Memory Impairment Screening Form or call the Center at (813) 974-4355, or toll-free in Florida at (800) 633-4563 to have one mailed. Complete the form and mail or fax it back to us prior to scheduling an appointment. We may also ask that you obtain pertinent medical records.

The Center accepts Medicare and Medicaid assignments. Please check your individual insurance policy for coverage of psychiatric services. Any questions regarding payment for services can be discussed when contacting the Center for an appointment (813) 974-4355. Services are available for Spanish speaking patients.
