Health Career Camps
AHEC Program

Gulfcoast North AHEC:
A major component of Gulfcoast North Area Health Education Center 's mission is to recruit middle school, high school, and college students--particularly those from rural or medically underserved areas--into various career opportunities available in health care. Special emphasis is placed on professions that provide primary health care, such as physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, family dentists, and other related allied health professions. Gulfcoast North AHEC accomplishes this mission through many activities such as middle school and high school health career camps and field trips.

Health Career Camps--GNAHEC's Health Career Camps are open to middle and high school students who show an interest in allied health fields. This 3-day, school board approved outing, is free of charge to the school and includes free transportation, admission to sites, meals, snacks, prizes, and other materials related to the camp. GNAHEC rotates through our five county areas of Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas, conducting two camps a year, along with a bi-annual camp reunion that allows all the campers to reunite for a day.

Health Careers Field Trips--Similar to the Health Career Camps, middle school and high school students are exposed to health professions and sites free of charge. This is a one school day experience for students to gain knowledge about health care careers. GNAHEC field trips are offered three times a year and also rotate between our five county areas. With these one day events, GNAHEC is able to reach more students throughout the year.

Gulfcoast South AHEC:
Health Career Camps are conducted for middle and high school students. These camps are handled by contracting with various nonprofit organizations. These camps offer students the chance for some in-depth study of the many health career fields as well as hands on experience and internships. There is some variation among the camps which is related to age-appropriate learning material. Additionally, the length of camps varies from two to six weeks. Highlights include guest speakers from health fields to medical sites (hospitals, physician offices, clinic, health departments, and colleges), internships at medical sites, and classroom instruction on job skills, CPR and first aid certification.

The mission of health career camps is to recruit students--particularly minority, disadvantaged and those from rural or medically underserved areas--and educate them about various career opportunities in health careers. Special emphasis is placed on professions that provide primary health care, such as physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, family dentists and other allied health professionals.
