USF Health Service Corps Sponsored Events & Projects
These projects and events are sponsored and approved by the USF Health Service Corps and are also listed in a calendar format at USF Health Service Corps Calendar. Interested USF Health students, faculty, staff and community partners are welcome to contact Ellen Kent, MPH, CPH, Faculty Coordinator for the USF Health Service Corps, at ekent@health.usf.edu or 813-974-6622, to suggest additional events and projects that may be added to this page.
STUDENTS:
First, thank you for your interest in participating in these service opportunities. Second, please remember that you should NOT miss scheduled classes/labs to participate in these service activities. Please note that some of the events listed below may have the name and email for a student leader of a specific student organization (so that you can have a contact person/liaison with whom you can sign up as a volunteer) but this does NOT limit participation to only those members of that particular student organization. In fact, the only events which have specific participation requirements are the clinical events listed in Section I, below. All other service events and projects listed in Sections II – VII are open to any interested USF Health student. Once that you sign up for an event, you will receive final detailed information and driving directions a few days before hand. ALSO – if you sign up for a service event and can not come at the last minute, please be sure to let the contact person know so that we can plan accordingly. Thank you!
COMMUNITY PARTNERS:
Please contact Ellen Kent, MPH, CPH, Faculty Coordinator for USF Health Service Corps, at ekent@health.usf.edu, with specific questions about the events listed on this page or if you wish to collaborate with the Service Corps. Thank you!

AMAZING new opportunity for our USF Health students to serve as science fair judges!
We are looking for enthusiastic USF Health students, with a basic knowledge of /and appreciation for research, and a desire to help youth, to serve as judges for the Hillsborough Regional Science and Engineering Fair, to be held on February 14th at the Tampa Convention Center! Elementary division judges are asked to dedicate 4 hours of their time, from 9 am to 1 pm, and secondary division judges (middle and senior high school) are asked to dedicate 5 hours of their time, from 11am - 4 pm. To sign up, please email Ellen Kent, MPH, CPH, USF Health Service Corps Faculty Coordinator, at ekent@health.usf.edu as soon as possible and specify whether you wish to serve as a judge for the elementary or secondary school division and then she will help you with the registration process. There are no specific requirements for judges and all judges will be provided with appropriate judging criteria and judging forms before the respective judging sessions. A light lunch will also be provided to judges! This is also a great way for our USF Health student researchers to serve as judges/mentors for younger students in the public schools on February 14th!
Unique opportunity to teach youth in the public schools ! See also
A number of Hillsborough County public schools have invited our USF Health students to teach the students at their schools!, Fridays seem to work out very well for both the USF Health students and the public schools, however if you are only available to teach on another day of the week, do not worry, and please feel free to sign up for another week day! You can also teach at Wiregrass Ranch HS In South Pasco County on April 5th 6th or 7th.
HOW to sign up: Please email the USF Health Service Corps Faculty Coordinator, Ellen Kent, MPH, CPH, at ekent@health.usf.edu with this information:
Email subject line: Teaching in the schools
Email Content Matter: Please include the following info: Your name (s) (feel free to sign up with a friend); Your USF Health academic program; What age you prefer to teach (eleme ntary, middle or high school) ; Subject matter that you plan to teach; your phone number and what Fridays & time s you can teach. (Please do NOT miss scheduled classes/labs to participate in this or other service activities). It is best to list a few Fridays and then Mrs. Kent will match you to a local school that is looking for speakers and call you with final details, directions, contact information at the school, etc.
What should I talk to the students about? You can bring in your ‘tools of the trade’ associated with your particular academic program (e.g. a stethoscope; a pedometer; mask, scientific meter, etc.) and you can explain to the K-12 students how you use these items. It is helpful to tell the students what you plan to do in your future health profession, the number of years of education and training needed for your profession, and job outlook. You may also wish to lead the students in an activity (e.g. hand washing). You may also wish to describe an exciting domestic/ international field experience or service trip that you participated in. You can also teach the students about what they can do to stay healthy/prevent illness and injury.
Materials: It is helpful to be positive and to promote USF Health and you are welcome to stop by Ellen’s office at the COPH anytime to pick up educational materials as well as materials about USF Health; please call Ellen at 974-6622 before you come.
