USF Health Service Corps Sponsored Events & Projects

These projects and events are sponsored and approved by the USF Health Service Corps and are also listed in a calendar format at USF Health Service Corps Calendar. Interested USF Health students, faculty, staff and community partners are welcome to contact Ellen Kent, MPH, CPH, Faculty Coordinator for the USF Health Service Corps, at ekent@health.usf.edu or 813-974-6622, to suggest additional events and projects that may be added to this page.

STUDENTS:

First, thank you for your interest in participating in these service opportunities. Second, please remember that you should NOT miss scheduled classes/labs to participate in these service activities. Please note that some of the events listed below may have the name and email for a student leader of a specific student organization (so that you can have a contact person/liaison with whom you can sign up as a volunteer) but this does NOT limit participation to only those members of that particular student organization. In fact, the only events which have specific participation requirements are the clinical events listed in Section I, below. All other service events and projects listed in Sections II – VII are open to any interested USF Health student. Once that you sign up for an event, you will receive final detailed information and driving directions a few days before hand. ALSO – if you sign up for a service event and can not come at the last minute, please be sure to let the contact person know so that we can plan accordingly. Thank you!

COMMUNITY PARTNERS:

Please contact Ellen Kent, MPH,  CPH, Faculty Coordinator for USF Health Service Corps, at ekent@health.usf.edu, with specific questions about the events listed on this page or if you wish to collaborate with the Service Corps. Thank you!

I. Health Fairs & Other Clinical Events

IMPORTANT INFORMATION - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!

(I) Important Policies and Procedures Pertaining to USF Health Service Corps Health Fairs & Screening Events

(A) Health fairs & screening events that are posted on the USF Health Service Corps website  (HUhttp://health.usf.edu/ahec/USFHealthServicesCorps/hscevents1.htmUH)  and calendar (HUhttp://my.calendars.net/servicecorpsUH)are considered sanctioned/approved by USF Health. Students from USF Colleges of Medicine and Nursing and School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences who participate in clinical screenings will be covered for liability purposes.

(B) University and Community partners should make the requests for USF Health students to participate in health fairs directly to Ellen Kent, MPH, CPH, Faculty Coordinator, USF Health Service Corps and NOT to individual students.  This system prevents confusion and duplication of efforts and allows for a more coordinated process.  If a request is made to a student, that request should immediately be forwarded on to Ellen Kent, MPH, CPH, so that she can verify that: there will be appropriate clinical supplies; there will be appropriate clinical supervision; and the event is accurately listed on the Service Corps websites.

(C)  If a COM, CON or PT student or student organization have an idea for a health fair for a specific population, they should first contact Ellen Kent, MPH, CPH, Faculty Coordinator for USF Health Service Corps, and she can assist them with all of the essential details related to the planning, implementation and evaluation of the health fair.

(D) When you sign up for a health fair,  be sure to indicate your academic program of study. Remember that when you participate in USF Health Service Corps activities, that you are representing USF Health/USF and that you are expected to dress and act in a highly professional manner. Please feel free to contact Ellen Kent, MPH, CPH, Faculty Coordinator for the USF Health Service Corps at HUekent@health.usf.eduUH if you have any questions about health fairs sponsored by USF Health Service Corps and she will be happy to help you.

(E) Specific information for USF Health students who are enrolled in clinical programs: UTrainedU medical (COM) and nursing (CON) students may participate in all screening activities (e.g. blood sugar and cholesterol screenings, BMI, vital signs) as well as the administration of flu shots, under the direct supervision of a USF Health clinical faculty member or a community health care provider with a USF Health clinical appointment. At selected health fairs, UtrainedU physical therapy (DPT) students may also perform specific physical therapy screening activities (e.g. posture assessments, sports physicals) under the direct supervision of a clinical faculty member in the School of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Sciences.  Also, medical students who have completed the Prevent Blindness Certification training program and are certified trainers can participate in vision screening at USF Health Service Corps health fairs/screening events.  COM, CON and PT students must wear their lab coat and ID card at all times and should arrive prior to the health fair to participate in an orientation session.  *Again, please note that COM, CON and DPT students must have completed the appropriate clinical skills training sessions in their respective academic programs before they sign up for these clinical events.

(F) Specific information for USF Health graduate students who are not enrolled in a clinical training program: Students enrolled in the College of Public Health (COPH) and COM non-clinical programs may assist with a wide variety of important non-clinical activities at health fairs (e.g. health education and fitness activities; fitting children with bicycle helmets; serving as interpreters). Please wear USF Health t-shirts.
