Saturday, January 11th - Nutrition and Fitness Fest for the Tampa Bay Refugee Community

Our USF students from the Colleges of Public Health, Pharmacy  and Medicine and Arts & Sciences (Anthropology Department) led refugee children and their families in a variety of FUN interactive activities related to nutrition, sports, dancing, gardening, and hand washing. Our students were also able to participate in the open house for the Tampa Bay Gardens Refugee Agricultural Partnership and learn about the exciting plans for this community garden, as  well as future potential service projects!

 Sunday, January 12th -  Special Event for Special Kids at Shriners Hospital! 

Our students from the Colleges of Public Health and Pharmacy and School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences  led children in a variety of activities in a special event  to celebrate the annual East West Shrine Games .



January 18th - USF Stampede of Service Day 

Manatee Villages Health Fair

This was  definitely a  interdisciplinary Service Corps health fair !  

Our medical and nursing students performed the health screenings and administered flu shots under supervision of Catholic Mobile Medical Services....

Our pharmacy students led the poison prevention activities  for adults and children.... and

Our public health and pre-health professional students lead the fun interactive health education activities for kids!

Saturday, January 18th - USF Stampede of Service Day 

Paint the Town at University Area Community Development Center

Our diverse USF Health Service Corps team of medical, pharmacy, public  health, nursing,  bio-medical sciences  and communication sciences students  contributed to  painting projects in the University Area community. Thank you to our students for helping to make the area look really nice!

Our medical, nursing, physical therapy and pharmacy students teamed up to provide a comprehensive health fair for the 'behind-the-scenes' workers at Tampa Bay Downs.

Wednesday,  February 12th -  USF Health and Weinberg Village 'Love  A Senior' Evening  of the Arts

Our  USF Health students and Weinberg Village residents shared their musical, writing and artistic  talents with each other.   This was a wonderful intergenerational evening of the arts and camaraderie  !

Wednesday, March 5th   -   Arts in Health Project at Shriners Hospital for Children 

USF College of Medicine and Public Health students led Shriners outpatients in  'relaxing' arts & crafts activities !


Saturday, March 8th - Safe Kids Safety Challenge 

Our students from the Colleges of Public Health,  Pharmacy  and Arts and Sciences had a blast teaching kids about safety at the Tampa Children's Expo.

Saturday, March 8th  - Men's Health Forum

On the same day, our students from the Colleges of Medicine and Nursing participated in the annual community-wide Men's Health Forum !




Monday, March 17th  - Hope Lodge Saint Patrick’s Day Dessert Party !

Our College of Medicine and Nursing students teamed up (and dressed up!) to provide an evening of delicious desserts and camaraderie with our  friends at the  Hope Lodge!

Friday, March 21st -  'Walk Like MADD' at USF!     

 Our College of Pharmacy  volunteers partnered with the Florida Poison Information Center  in sharing practical Poison Prevention tips with the public  during the Annual Mothers against Drunk Driving Walk.


Saturday, March 22nd -  USF College of Education  'Wild World of Learning' Children’s Festival

Our volunteers from the Colleges of Public Health, Medicine and Pharmacy led three FUN interactive health education stations:  Explore a Health Career;  Prevent Poisonings; and Just Don’t Smoke !

Saturday, March 22nd -  BrickmaniaTM event  at Carrollwood Day School, to introduce  youth to  STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) educational opportunities

Our volunteers from the Colleges of Pharmacy and Medicine  introduced youth to the many opportunities in health professions and our excellent USF Health academic programs! Our students  led the youth (and their parents too!) in FUN interactive activities related to:  keeping your heart healthy; eating healthy; keeping away the germs; staying away from drugs and tobacco; and watching out for poisons !

Thursday, March 27th Fun Flower Fundraiser for NEDA!

Need a Flower?   Everyone can benefit from cheerful spring time flowers! Thanks  to our energetic student volunteers and  generous faculty and staff, we  had a successful fund raiser to benefit the National  Eating Disorders Association.

Sunday, April 6th,  Tampa Bay Burmese Council Health Fair and Festival, as part of  National Public Health Week  

This was  definitely an  interdisciplinary Service Corps health fair !  

Our medical and pharmacy students performed the health screenings under supervision of USF Health clinical faculty, our medical students led the vision screenings, and our public health, medical and pre-health professional students led the fun interactive health education activities for kids!


April 8th, Give Life Day at The Well, as part of  National Public Health Week  
 This year, we added a personal touch to Give Life Day, and in addition to donating blood and registering for  Donate Life Florida and Be the Match registries, people could  autograph  a  USF Health lab coat,  USF  teddy bear and  USF  shirt for  3 children who  have been touched by blood cancers.

Thursday, April 10th,  Benito Middle School Health Expo,  as part of  National Public Health Week 


USF  students from the Colleges of Public Health, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and  Arts and Sciences teamed up with  experts from the Florida Department of Health- Hillsborough and Center for Autism and Related Disabilities at USF, to bring National Public Health Week to Benito! 

Over 1000 middle school students visited fun, interactive stations on topics of: 'Stay Alert, Stay Safe'; 'Just Don't Smoke',  'Stay Fit and Eat Well'; 'Say No to Tobacco and Drugs',  'Check out the Health Professions' and 'Accept Other Kids The Way They Are- Autism Awareness'.

Friday,  April 11th,  Advocates for World Health Sorting  Party,  as part of National Public Health Week 


Public health and pharmacy students assisted with sorting and inventory of medical supplies at  the Advocates for World Health, which is a not-for-profit corporation that recovers surplus medical products and distributes them to relief agencies working in developing nations.

Saturday, April 12th, Haitian Health Fair,  as part of National Public Health Week

Saturday, April 12th, Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful, as part of National Public Health Week 

College of Public Health and Pharmacy students contributed to this important environmental service activity, by helping to clean up  a local nature preserve.

Our public health and pharmacy students had fun helping to paint and spruce up a home in the Ybor City area of Tampa



Monday, May 5th,  Cinqo De Mayo Health Fair and Fiesta with Farmworkers Self Help

 Student volunteers from the Colleges of Medicine,  Pharmacy,  Nursing and Public Health   assisted with health screenings for  adults and a wide  variety of FUN, interactive health and safety education activities for kids!  What a festive and fun event for all !

Thursday, May 8th, Health Screenings at the 'Go Red for Women' American Heart Association Kick Off Event

Thanks to our  medical and nursing students who helped with the health screenings at this classy community event ! 


Saturday, May 10th, Mexican Mother's Day Health Fair in Wimauma  

Our USF Health students certainly learned, served and had fun during this festive event to celebrate moms and their families!

Our USF medical and nursing students performed the blood sugar and blood pressure screenings for adults while our medical students in the opthamology interest group performed the vision screenings....


and our public health students and alumni led the Passport to Safety activities for children....

and everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch and entertainment by a high school band and even a Mexican mariachi band!

May 30th,  American Heart Association Strokes For Stroke Art Show and Fundraiser

Our USF Service Corps volunteers assisted with welcoming guests to this creative fundraiser  designed to showcase artwork created by stroke survivors.   In the process, we were able to meet some wonderful  people,  view some unique art ... and learn about  the research and educational programs led by the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association.

Students,please note-  we are able to utilize many of the  excellent educational materials created by AHA for our  USF Health Service Corps  health fairs and teaching  events.... so please be sure to support  our USF Health teams for the AHA heart walk next  fall !

Meals on Wheels!

On May 31st, an  energetic group of nursing students woke up really early and helped with preparing  'hurricane packs' for the meals on wheels recipients. What a wonderful service to the community !

In addition,  USF Health Service Corps has adopted a Meals on Wheels Tampa Route for two Monday mornings a month.  Volunteers can pick up 10-12 meals in a cooler at a site near USF, deliver the meals to home bound individuals on our special Service Corps’ route, and then return the cooler to the pickup site.  You can volunteer as often as you wish ! To learn more, visit the Summer 2014 Service Corps Opportunities  website, section V, and  see the  description  about  Meals on Wheels.


       'Target Tuesdays' at Glazer Children’s Museum

On the first Tuesday of each month during the summer, our USF Health students assist our colleagues with St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital with their 'Safety Stop' station.

June 12th, World Refugee Day 2014 at Jefferson High School

More than 25 COPH, CON and COM students contributed to this community event, by: creating an interactive display about the refugee experience;  graciously serving an international dinner; leading  flag making  and other crafts activities with youth; and serving as hosts/hostesses. Thank you to our students and to our community partners!

June 20th, World's Largest Swim Lesson !

More than 20 nursing and public health  students led children through  water safety education activities, after they participated in swimming lessons at three local pool complexes.

June 28th, Multicultural health Fair  for Global Refuge Community Church 

What a successful and fun multidisciplinary health fair !

Our  medical, nursing, pharmacy and public health students teamed up to provide health screenings, vision checks, citizen CPR, health insurance  information, and interactive  health and fitness and safety activities for kids!

     Teaching  and Mentoring Opportunities   

Our USF Health students have many opportunities to share their expertise and enthusiasm about health professions with youth in  both public school settings and  special  programs at USF Health. Students are welcome to contact the Service Corps Coordinator, Ellen Kent, MPH,CPH for assistance in selecting these teaching opportunities, identifying health education resources, and planning creative lessons.

  In these  photos, public health and nursing students share their valuable experiences and advice about college and careers with high school students participating In the COPH's June Summer Institute in Public Health.



Sensational Spring Semester International Book Drive for Children and Teens      

The COPH Harrell Center and the  Research Institute of Worlds’ Ancient Traditions Cultures & Heritage (RIWATCH) a research agency in the Himalayan Mountains of India, sponsored a  USF Health book drive to provide youth in remote parts of India with books . Public health and social  work students who  participated in a summer  study abroad program in  India,  hand delivered  over 100  books in May, to jump-start a novel  "Bag Pack Librarian"  program  by RIWATCH and Lohit Library Movement.  See also news stories
